Cost: The cost of your customized guitar typically begins at $800 for a basic design. However, please note that the final price may increase depending on art details, the amount of prep work involved, and the level of finishing work required. To initiate the process, a 50% payment upfront is necessary, with the remaining balance due prior to the shipment of your guitar. Please contact me to discuss the specific details.
Sketching: I will first create a preliminary rough layout of the design. This serves as an initial visualization of the artwork. Once the design is approved by you and the initial 50% payment is received, then the guitar can be shipped to me.
Masking: Preparing the guitar for painting requires thorough attention to detail. For optimal results, it is recommended to disassemble the guitar as much as possible, although some individuals choose to retain the neck. I will meticulously mask off all areas that are not intended to be painted using tape. However, it's important to note that if I am not working with a blank body and all parts removed, achieving a flawlessly glossy finish along the masked areas is impossible.
Sanding: I’ll lightly sand down the factory finish to eliminate its glossy appearance. This step is crucial because the artwork won't adhere properly to the surface of a polished, glossy guitar. Roughening up the surface slightly through sanding will ensure optimal adhesion for the artwork.
Drawing: Once the guitar is prepped, the next step involves transferring the sketch onto the guitar or freehand drawing the artwork directly onto the surface. This stage allows the design to take shape and come to life.
Drying & Final Color: I use acrylic paints and inks to hand apply your design. After applying the paint, it is essential to allow sufficient time for it to dry completely. This process typically takes a few days.
Clear Coating: Once the final coloring and artwork have been applied to the guitar and allowed to dry for a few days, the next step is the clear coat process. To protect the artwork and prevent it from scratching off, I utilize a Polyurethane gloss or semi-gloss clear coat. This protective layer is applied by spraying 3-4 coats throughout a single day, ensuring sufficient drying time between each application.
After 1-2 days, I proceed to sand the initial clear coat using multiple levels of grit, aiming to achieve a smooth and level surface. Following the sanding process, I apply several more coats of clear coat, once again allowing ample drying time between each layer. The result of this process yields a semi-gloss satin finish.
Shipping: Once the entire process is complete, it is time to arrange for the shipment of your personalized guitar. I will ensure that your guitar is securely packaged to protect it during transit.
Throughout the process, I will update you on the painting progress and will text or email you photos.
